Company Details

The Nissan Motor Company has its main head office in Yokohama, Japan but manufacturers and sells automobiles all over the world. The firm employs over 150,000 people in Japan, the United Kingdom, India, the United States, Russia, Australia and many more countries.

The company was formed in the 1930s, taking its name from a shortened version of the Japanese holding company Nihon Sangyo.

In the United Kingdom, Nissan Motor Company manufactures as NMUK from its base at Sunderland in the North East of the country. The facility employs around 5,000 members of staff on either permanent or temporary roles.

At Sunderland, you will find that Nissan operates apprenticeships and training schemes for young people in the UK. If you are leaving school or college and don’t want to continue on to university then joining up with Nissan at this level could be the perfect option for you. The training scheme, dubbed YES (Youth Evolution Scheme) runs for 19 weeks and includes a balanced mix of on and off the job training in a variety of roles.

If you have already been to university - or will be leaving soon - and want to work with Nissan, then you will be pleased to hear that the automotive giant also runs a graduate scheme near Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire. The graduate programme at Nissan runs for two years and will give you high quality experience in four different areas of the car industry in the UK.

You will need at least 300 UCAS points and some form of previous and relevant work experience to win a place on the Nissan graduate programme. They also require a degree of at least 2:1 and, although they will consider graduates from all subject backgrounds, they do prefer students from business-related backgrounds.

As well as engineering and manufacturing opportunities at Nissan in Hertfordshire, there are also vacancies for students and graduates who want to work in finance, operations and information systems.

Undergraduates should also consider trying to earn a place on the one year placement scheme at Nissan. Competition is tough as there is only an intake of eight students each year, but you receive a fantastic grounding in one of these departments: Marketing Analyst, Product Marketing, Marketing Communications, Press/PR, After Sales Marketing, Sales Operations, Customer Services or Human Resources.

If you can get yourself on the Nissan placement scheme while you are still an undergraduate then you will certainly improve your chances of getting on their full graduate programme once you have completed your degree. And even if you reconsider and decide that a career with Nissan is not for you, then you will still have a wealth of work experience that other top employers will value highly.

The car firm also has a facility at Cranfield in Bedfordshire which operates as Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE). If you fancy working on the development and designs of future Nissan models, then you should check out the options available at Cranfield too.
