The Suffolk brewer Greene King has been in the pub business since just before the turn of the 18th Century - just one year before in actual fact, when Benjamin Greene established the Westgate Brewery at Bury St Edmunds in 1799.
Now listed on the FTSE 250 of the UK stock exchange, Greene King has acquired other beer brand names like Ruddles, Morland and Ridley’s and can claim to have had a hand in around 1 in 50 of every pint of beer swilled in the country.
Just a few of the Greene King family of beers you might yourself have sampled include Abbot Ale, Greene King IPA, Ruddles County and Old Speckled Hen.
Greene King has become a huge commercial success, with regular profits of over £100 million a year from over 2,000 pubs, restaurants and hotels in their portfolio. They now operate in three main business areas: retail, pub partners and brewing & brands - all of which offer opportunities for young students, graduates and entrepreneurs.
So, if you fancy finding out what happens at the other side of the bar at Greene King, then there are a number of options for you to consider. And it certainly isn’t all just about pulling pints at your local...
Greene King offer job opportunities from entry level positions right up to management level. If you fancy working in one of their pubs, hotels or restaurants then jobs available include everything from bar staff to cleaners to receptionists to chefs to glass collectors to kitchen porters and waiting on staff. Most of these roles are on offer on either a full or part time basis to students and other job seekers.
If you want to move up through the ranks then you could also move into the management of a Greene King pub, hotel or restaurant. Training is provided from entry level and apprenticeships are also catered for at Greene King.
Or, if the smell of beer is not for you, you could also consider working at Greene King’s head office in Bury St Edmunds. Over there you will find the full complement of support roles for the hospitality and catering industry. Students and graduates could move into every department from Finance to IT and from Marketing to Buying.
One other option, if you are an aspiring entrepreneur and can get the finances together (not easy, we know) then you could even run your own pub with Greene King.
So, there you go! There are tons of opportunities for young people at Greene King if you are willing to work hard and make their business as successful as you want to be.
Let’s drink to that!
