Company Details

Shelter is the homelessness and housing charity of England, Scotland & Wales. It was first set up in London in the 1960s by Notting Hill’s Reverend Bruce Kenrick who was disturbed by the housing conditions in his local parish.

Two years after the English Shelter was set up, a further organisation was established in Scotland to tackle similar problems of housing and homelessness north of the border. The Wales division of Shelter (Shelter Cymru) was formed in the early 1980s.

Shelter believes that it is a fundamental human right to have access to a decent home and belong to a community. They carry out charity work to help wipe out the suffering caused by homelessness and poor housing conditions. Shelter offers advice to homeless people and fights the root causes that brings about bad housing.

And, of course, Shelter need to raise money to help them alleviate the poor housing conditions in areas all over Britain.

Shelter is always looking for fundraisers to bring in cash to achieve their charitable aims - and they will pay decent money to students and other people who can raise money for them.

Through the employment4students website, Shelter regularly advertises street fundraising and door to door fundraising opportunities where you too can help to make a difference to the lives and living conditions of many people in the UK.

To work for Shelter in a fundraising position you will need to be a good communicator with bags of energy and have a genuine passion for helping homeless and disadvantaged people in bad housing conditions. A strong persuasive character is also an essential attribute if you are going to convince people to part with their cash in order to help the Shelter cause.

Shelter is constantly growing and tries to fight homelessness everywhere, but, at the moment, they tend to offer the majority of their fundraising jobs in the key cities of London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

One of the great things for any students interested in fundraising work in London or other major UK cities is that much of the work can be carried out in the evenings and weekends. Flexible work like jobs with Shelter can fit in around your studies without too much disturbance, and a spell of charity work will also look great on your CV.
