About us

City Year UK is a leading youth and education charity working in London, Birmingham and from 2015 in Manchester. We are a beacon for a volunteer service year. Through empowering young people to ‘be the change’ they wish to see in their communities, we raise the attainment and ambition of children from disadvantaged backgrounds while supporting our volunteers to develop skills and networks to realise their ambitions after City Year.

Originally founded in Boston in 1988 by Harvard Law School roommates Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, City Year now operates in 25 US cities with nearly 3,000 young people dedicating 11 months of service each year. City Year was able to come to the UK in 2010 and our ambition for the next ten years is to grow to support 70,000 children with 1000 corps members in 100 schools across 5 UK cities.

Since 2010, 400 young people have completed a ‘City Year’ in London and Birmingham, giving more than 570,000 hours and reaching over 20,000 children growing up in deprived areas. More than ninety percent of City Year UK’s alumni make a smooth transition into further education, employment or training after their ‘City Year’.

What will you do?

Our volunteers, known as ‘corps members’, are between the ages of 18 - 25 and act as role models and mentors for children in schools. Monday to Thursday is spent in school alongside a team of City Year corps members supporting and equipping children with what they need to learn and succeed. This will involve running breakfast and after school clubs and where possible providing 1:1 support in class. Corps members are uniquely well-placed to create meaningful relationships with children who need help to do well at school. They spend large amounts of time with pupils inside and outside the classroom, are nearer in age than most teaching staff and often share life experiences.

City Year is also about developing yourself as a leader and preparing you for long term work or study after City Year. Our Fridays are all about professional and personal development; developing transferable skills to ensure our corps members can succeed after City Year. Through workshops, corporate engagement and networking opportunities over 300 hours are spent on Leadership Development

Where can your City Year take you?

A year working with children does not necessarily mean that the education sector is the only professional destination option for corps members after City Year. We aim to support corps members with: identifying their strengths and individual areas of professional interest; developing transferable skills during their service year and helping them to identify pathways to realise aspirations. Our corps members go on to a variety of interesting opportunities with other organisations after completing City Year: Higher education, teacher training, graduate schemes, apprenticeships, joining staff at City Year and much more.

What you receive

  • £100 per week subsistence in London; £90 in Birmingham and Manchester
  • Additional travel expenses
