In 1939, Greggs started out life as an egg and yeast delivery business in Newcastle-upon-Tyne so that families could bake their own bread. Eventually, in 1951, John Gregg was able to open his first shop in the area and Greggs as we know it today was born. Today, there are almost 2,000 Greggs bakeries and the company is continuing to expand, fending off competition from supermarkets by concentrating on their own strengths and qualities.
