Businesses 'paying more for the right people'

Businesses 'paying more for the right people' Students looking for graduate jobs in London may be interested to hear that despite a reduction in the overall amount of recruitment, employers are paying more for the right people.

According to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's (REC) Annual Industry Turnover and Key Volumes Survey 2007/08, turnover from permanent placements increased from £3.5 billion to £4.3 billion despite a drop in the number of placements of more 60,000.

The REC believes the figures suggest employers are willing to pay more for the right candidates.

Commenting on the results, Kevin Green, the REC's chief executive, said: "The downturn is really putting the skills of professional recruiters to the test but at the same time, this is giving them a real opportunity to shine and show employers what they’re really made of."

He added that as Britain's economy heads into a significant downturn new legislation and taxes should not be implemented that add further barriers for recruitment services.

Meanwhile, prime minister Gordon Brown has said that Britain is prepared for the looming recession and will pull through the economic downturn.
