'PhD career scheme praised' A programme which helps PhD students at Imperial College progress to the next phase in career and find graduate jobs in London has been praised by the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards 2008.

The colleges Your PhD: Finish Up & Move On scheme won the Outstanding Support for Early Careers Researchers award and is the second time the college has won an accolade at the THE Awards.

Professor Bernard Morley, Director of the Graduate School for Life Sciences and Medicine said: "We are delighted to win this award for the second time in three years."

He added: "This national recognition for the quality and breadth of our transferable skills training programme consolidates the reputation of Imperial College."

The practical two-day course, which runs twice every academic year, gives students an opportunity to put forward business ideas related to their research and also offers a chance to learn valuable skills in leadership.

Last month, Science minister Lord Drayson said the UK needs more Science icons for graduates to look up to.

Talking to the BBC, he said he wanted to get young people as fired up about science as he was.
