Recruitment fairs 'are important'

21 Oct 2008

Recruitment fairs 'are important' Students looking for gradauate jobs in London need to understand the importance of keeping in touch with what is happening in the job market, it has been claimed.

According to Carl Gilleard, chief executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters, graduate recruitment fairs are the best way of forging links with prospective employers, reports the Guardian.

He told the paper: "Telling students who are coming up to graduation to go to a careers fair is one of the first pieces of advice I give out."

"People who are narrow-minded in their approach to careers will find it more difficult," he added.

He claimed that spotting a firm at an employment fair means they are recruiting and it is good to know which sectors and businesses are hiring.

According to the Times, the economic downturn means graduates have "never had it so bad" when it comes to finding employment after university.

However, Tammy Goldfeld, assistant director of the University of Manchester's Careers and Development Division told Student Direct that students should not discount industries reporting downward trends in the media as some recruitment schemes are booming.

She claimed that a degree alone was not enough to guarantee a job and an awareness of communication and team skills was now crucial.
