Part-time job improves employability

18 Oct 2008

Part-time job improves employability Students looking for a graduate job in London could improve their chances of getting one by taking up part-time work while they study, it has been claimed.

According to the National Association of Student Employment Services (NASES), working while studying can provide students with an opportunity to develop their professional skills before they graduate.

Alison Clarke, director of NASES, said: "Through part-time work, students have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, the opportunity to develop their professional skills and to enhance their future employability in anticipation of graduating."

Research by the National Union of Students (NUS) and high street bank HSBC shows that three out of four university students take on a part-time work during term time and half get a job during the holidays.

Many students take on jobs during their studies to reduce the amount of debt they leave university with.

According to the NUS, the average university leaver has a debt of £40,000.

Meanwhile, a Sutton Trust report found that 59 per cent of students not entering higher education did so because they were concerned about getting into debt, according to studentnewspaper.org.
