'The graduate recruitment shop is not closed'

13 Oct 2008

'The graduate recruitment shop is not closed' Despite the economic downturn taking hold the number of exhibitors at the Scottish Graduate Fair is equal to the previous record, it has been reported.

The annual fair, held in Glasgow this Tuesday and Wednesday, is expected to attract 4,000 students and graduates and will have 125 exhibitors, according to the Sunday Herald.

Barbara Graham, director of Strathclyde University's careers service - which organises the fair - told the paper: "The 125 exhibitors we have at the fair this year matches the best we've had in any previous year. That surprises me, because I had expected that there might have been a lot of cancellations from employers."

According to the Confederation of British Industry, there is the potential for a skills shortage in science, technology and engineering roles, with the number of undergraduates taking science courses dwarfed by the numbers taking arts and humanities subjects.

Meanwhile, the replacement of UK science minister Ian Pearson with multi-millionaire Paul Drayson has been largely welcomed by scientists, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry.
