Tesco 'committed to graduate recruitment'

20 Sep 2008

Tesco 'committed to graduate recruitment' Supermarket chain Tesco said it is committed to its graduate recruitment program, it has been reported.

Despite the economic downturn, the company said it had recruited 250 new graduates through its 15 graduate schemes this month.

Tesco also claims it employs 60,000 under-graduates throughout the UK and has put 100 school leavers through its fast-track management programme.

Lorna Bryson, head of resourcing for UK operations at Tesco, said: "While other employers are cutting back on hiring, we remain committed to hiring quality people."

She said Tesco is always on the lookout for people who could end up at the top of the business and claimed Tesco is one of a handful of graduate employers that provide enough workplace development and training to provide their employees with a career for life.

Meanwhile, Tesco's US operation Fresh & Easy is facing a call by United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), the largest US grocery workers' union, to recognise them, reports the Financial Times.

The paper reportsed the UFWC has campaigned against Tesco's continued expansion in the US by picketing its stores on their opening day.
