Graduate dos and don'ts

19 Sep 2008

Graduate dos and don'ts An industry expert has laid out his guide to getting on in the world of graduate advertising jobs.

Ben Fennell told Brand Republic that those who have been employed in such roles should ensure they do not change their personality or outlook on life because these are part of the reason they have been hired.

He also advised those new to the world of advertising that they should look to learn rather than shoot up the career ladder, while ensuring they are collaborating with rather than competing against their colleagues.

The advertiser recommended looking for help if it is needed and advised finding mentors.

In addition, Mr Fennell said, it is important to remember who was nice to the new graduates and who was not.

"People who treat grads badly are like people who treat waiters and secretaries badly; they shouldn't be trusted and they always get what they deserve," he commented.

Mr Fennell also advised those going into graduate careers to ensure they do not sacrifice what they enjoy doing to climb up in their place of work.

According to the Advertising Association, not all advertising work is glamorous and highly paid.

However, the group claimed it does offer a wide variety of different roles and opportunities.
