'Great job potential from green economy'

10 Sep 2008

'Great job potential from green economy' The Green Party unveiled a new report at its annual conference which claims a low-carbon economy could create a quarter of a million renewable energy jobs in the UK.

Green Work, which points out the job creating potential of green industries like wind and solar power, was unveiled by Jean Lambert MEP.

The report also points to a potential skills shortage in the UK if government fails to capitalise on the benefits of the green revolution.

Jean Lambert said: "Clearly what is needed is a comprehensive green skills action plan for the renewables sector, delivered with significant state funding."

"It is essential to increase the pool of people with Stem qualifications – science, technology, engineering and maths," she added.

The announcement follows warnings of a potential shortage of IT graduates as a result of the way the sector is perceived by students.

According to the director of strategy at e-Skills Margaret Sambell the curriculum needs changing to encourage more people to study IT.

She claims that failure to do so will impact on the British economy.
