Somerset boasts 'top graduate scheme'

09 Sep 2008

Somerset boasts 'top graduate scheme' Somerset county council claims it has attracted more graduates than any other local authority.

The councils received more than 200 applications since the start of the year and will welcomed 21 university graduates to the three-year scheme today (September 9th).

Somerset county council’s chief executive Alan Jones told the paper: “We believe that we have one of the most innovative and creative local government graduate schemes in the whole of the UK."

"Applications were of an extremely high calibre this year," he added.

The scheme is managed by Southwest One and the recruitment drive for next year's university graduates will start in April 2009.

Meanwhile, some industry sectors in the UK, such as social care, need to improve their graduate recruitment programmes, it has been claimed.

HR director at Care South Moira Brown said 2.5 million social care workers would be needed in the UK by 2025.

She said many graduates don't think of social care as a career opportunity and more innovative recruitment is required to ensure the country has enough workers in the industry to cope with the ageing population.
