First graduates in forensic art 'enter job market'

09 Sep 2008

First graduates in forensic art 'enter job market' The world's only degree course in forensic art has created its first graduates.

According to the BBC, the course at Dundee University teaches techniques of facial reconstruction often required by the police to identify badly decomposed bodies.

The university's degree showpieces include the reconstructed face of an Egyptian mummy and portraits of criminals from the 18th century, reports the BBC.

Greg Mahoney, a former forensic artist with the Boston Police Department, who runs the course, told the news provider: "I am delighted to see our first cohort of graduates come through the course with such an interesting and varied range of projects."

"They will leave as the most highly qualified new practitioners in this field," he added.

Meanwhile, a recent breakthrough in forensic linguistic research may result in criminals being identified by their text messages.

Speaking at the BA Festival of Science in Liverpool, Dr Tim Grant, deputy director of the Centre for Forensic Linguistics at Aston University, said the new field of research could be used by police to analyse written documents.
