Grads need experience, says REC

09 Aug 2008

Grads need experience, says REC Students need to think about the type of experience which will help them to stand out in the job graduate market, one expert claims.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) is urging graduates to think long and hard about how best to demonstrate they have the skills needed and the drive to engage with the business they are applying to.

Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the REC, said as there are more and more graduate employers looking for that something else in candidates apart from just a degree.

"[Graduates] must demonstrate that not only do they have the degree to prove that they are capable of doing the job but also that they have the sort of organisational skills and also the drive to engage with the business they are applying to," she added.

The Association of Graduate Recruiters Graduate Recruitment Summer review, published last month, found the graduate recruitment market was surviving despite the economic downturn.

It established that vacancies for grad-level position are growing with a rise of 11.7 per cent on the same period in 2007.
