Care work shortfall

08 Aug 2008

Care work shortfall Innovative graduate recruitment is vital to secure the future social care workforce, it is being claimed.

Care South is concerned about the lack of young people opting for the sector, which it believes could cause a major staffing problem in 20 years time, Personneltoday.com reports.

Moria Brown, human resources director of the social care charity, told the website that third-sector organisations and local authorities need to adopt innovative approaches in the way care jobs are advertised to make them more appealing to graduates due to the low interest currently being shown.

"I don't think graduates see social care as a career opportunity. We've also got an ageing population, so where is that workforce going to come from? It's not so much a skills shortage, as a people shortage," she added.

According to Communitycare.co.uk, there are currently about 600,000 social care staff employed in local authorities and the voluntary sector nationwide.

It adds the industry had a vacancy rate of 9.5 per cent for social workers, 5.6 per cent in private sector homes and 7.9 per cent in voluntary sector.
