Job security confidence low in UK

06 Aug 2008

Job security confidence low in UK Workers in the UK are increasingly worried about the security of their jobs, new research has found.

Students who work part-time to support their studies at university could be interested to hear that a Lloyds TSB survey of 2,000 adults has found nearly one third fear their job has become less secure over the course of the past year.

The data adds that 61 per cent feel it is about the same and one in ten believes it is better.

Chief economist at Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets, Trevor Williams, said the combination of falling employment confidence alongside rising inflation expectations is a "lethal cocktail" for the economy.

"If people don't feel safe in their job and high prices are putting incomes under pressure then demand for discretionary purchases will naturally slow," he remarked, adding the survey shows consumers are bracing themselves for the worst when it comes to the "squeeze on the household purse".

Meanwhile, a recent study by Natwest has found an increasing number of students are taking up part-time work and holiday jobs.

The research suggests record numbers of students are working to reduce the debt caused by their courses as more than 40 per cent of undergraduates have secured such employment.
