Pay London workers more, mayor urges

28 Jul 2008

Pay London workers more, mayor urges Mayor of London Boris Johnson has called on employers to increase the wages they pay their staff, which may interest those holding part-time jobs in the capital.

The mayor would like companies to pay at least £7.45 per hour, in order for their workers to meet the new London Living Wage.

Speaking at Barclays in London Docklands, Mr Johnson said the rate had been increased from £7.20 an hour to meet the increasing cost of living in the city.

The move would make "good business sense, contributing to better recruitment and retention of staff, higher productivity and a more loyal workforce with high morale", Mr Johnson continued.

"I look forward to the day when we can say that no Londoner is being paid anything less than the London Living Wage," he added.

Megan Dobney, regional secretary for the Trades Union Congress in London, said if firms did increase wages for their lower-paid employees, which may include those holding part-time jobs or carrying out temp work, could help a range of problems in the city such as child poverty.

Earlier this month, trade union Unison claimed local authorities across the UK could use the £3 billion they have saved through efficiency drives to pay their staff more.
