Flexible work urged for men

16 Jul 2008

Flexible work urged for men More men should be encouraged to take-up flexible working arrangements, according to one expert – news which may be of interest to student fathers seeking to spend time with their families.

Sarah Jackson, chief executive of work-life balance campaign group Working Families, said in order to breakdown "gender stereotypes" there needs to be "more widespread" uptake of flexible working.

The expert made her comments in response to suggestions that extending the right to request flexible working would be to the detriment of women's careers.

"We know that flexible working works best - for business and for families - when it is made available to everyone," Ms Jackson remarked.

Although flexible working is already available to both men and women, "we need to see greater take-up by men", she added.

The government made it a statutory right to request flexible working, if employees have a child under six or a disabled child under 18.

Under the rules, the partner of a parent or guardian of such children is also eligible to work flexibly.
