TUC condemns homophobia

TUC condemns homophobia The general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has condemned homophobic comments made by an Irish minister.

In news which may interest gay students who work part-time, TUC chairman Brendan Barber has written letters to the first minister, deputy first minister and secretary of state for Northern Ireland in response to comments made by MP Iris Robinson.

Mr Barber said: "At a time when great progress is being made to bring about a more equal and tolerant society, one of the remaining challenges is the elimination of prejudice and hostility towards LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] people."

The TUC says it is complaining on behalf of all unions in the Northern Ireland area, with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions having already lodged a complaint.

Ms Robinson's were deemed to be particularly offensive as they concerned an incidence of homophobic hate crime.

She is the MP for the Strangford area in Northern Ireland and a representative of the DUP party.
