Oil sector safer, says TUC

08 Jul 2008

Oil sector safer, says TUC Students looking to work on an oil rig or for an oil firm on a year internship may be pleased to hear the government has asked the Health and Safety Executive to review progress made in improving conditions in the offshore oil and gas industry.

The TUC has welcomed the announcement which was made on the 20th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster in which 167 people were killed.

Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said: "A full review of the infrastructure and procedures in the offshore industry, including the levels of worker involvement and support for safety representatives, is needed to prevent further tragedies."

He added trade unions had been pushing for safety to be looked at in this industry for a number of years, pointing out that workers have been killed on rigs in eight years out of the previous decade.

Mr Barber also commented that high oil prices had meant that many installations were operating well beyond their intended life-span.

The TUC aims to bring Britain's unions together to establish common policies, it lobbies the government to improve working conditions and it campaigns of social and economic issues.
