LGBT equality education needed, says TUC

04 Jul 2008

LGBT equality education needed, says TUC Equality education is the only way to stop homophobic bullying, one employment expert has said.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is calling on the government to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) equality education in the school curriculum to address the problem of bullying.

Gay students who are experiencing homophobic bullying or discrimination while working on internships could be interested to hear the TUC is pressuring the government into re-addressing the problem.

Speaking at the TUC's annual LGBT conference in London, general secretary Brendan Barber said the nation's education system should be the front line of the fight against homophobic discrimination.

"Whereas our schools and colleges have done much to counter racism and sexism, the same cannot be said when it comes to tackling homophobia. Too many educational establishments are breeding grounds for the worst kind of casual prejudice," he added.

The TUC is joining forces with teaching unions and other LGBT groups to pressure the government until into making LGBT equality education a priority.

According to the union, it represents more than six and a half million workers and campaigns for a fair deal at work and for social justice at home and abroad.
