'Govt must promote equality'

28 Jun 2008

'Govt must promote equality' The government must promote the business need for diversity when updating discrimination law in order to ensure progress can be made, one industry body has said.

Welcoming the proposals for the Equality Bill, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said the nation cannot afford to miss out on the unique opportunity to tackle discrimination.

Dianah Worman, CIPD diversity Adviser, said she government needs to ensure it spells out exactly how the changes proposed will function so firms do not "unwittingly fall foul of the law".

"Finally, law on its own is simply not enough. Government needs to engage employers to take action because it makes business sense," she added.

The government needs to publish easily accessible guidelines for firms to follow and initiate a national awareness campaign, Ms Worman concluded.

Students working part-time to support their studies could be interested to hear the proposals which suggest action is being taken to improve equality in the workplace.

Earlier in the month, the Trades Union Congress called on employers to address the unethical pay gender gap and provide more flexible working patterns for mothers.
