Expert: Review H&S guidelines

Expert: Review H&S guidelines Firms must ensure they review health and safety procedures before they take students on placements, one expert has said.

Health and Safety firm Croner is urging organisations planning to take on students to ensure a risk assessment has taken place, it has been reported.

Students about to embark on work placements during the summer in order to gain some vital experience before going back to university after the holiday weeks could be interested to hear firms are being reminded about their safety.

Stephen Thomas, health and safety expert at the firm, told the Online Recruitment magazine that as many young workers have little or no knowledge of working environments it is "vital" that employers understand the risks involved when taking on students.

"Young people will be facing unfamiliar risks from the job they will be doing and so will need more guidance, adequate training and closer supervision," he added.

It was reported earlier in the week by the Independent that Lancaster University claims summer internships are in "invaluable" source of hands-on experience for students.
