Summer internships are an "invaluable" source of hands-on experience for students at university, one careers expert has said.
Lancaster University revealed summer placements and internships are a way for students to gain practical experience to test what they have learnt at university, the Independent reports.
Jane Johnson, corporate relations manager at the university, told the publication: "Projects and internships are an invaluable way of students putting learning into practice.
"It's an opportunity to build on existing expertise, or, if you're looking for a career move, to try something different."
The newspaper reports that though internships at major organisations are highly competitive, they are lucrative and offer a great experience for the students working on them.
Graduate Prospects claimed earlier this week it has never been easier for students researching companies before applying for internships because of all the information available online at the click of a mouse.
Meanwhile, earlier in the year it was claimed by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services that graduates who complete internships are ahead of the rest.
