Flexible working rights extended

16 May 2008

Flexible working rights extended The government has accepted the recommendations set out in an independent review bestowing the right to request flexible working to 4.5 million parents of children aged up to 16, it has emerged.

Business secretary John Hutton accepted the proposals made by Sainsbury's HR director Imelda Walsh into the extension of rights to request, and the rules should come into force by next April.

This could be of interest to student parents who work part-time to support their studies and a child under 16, as flexible working rights will be extended to them that could enable them to juggle their responsibilities more efficiently.

Ms Walsh said: "I am convinced that the challenges which parents with older children face are considerable, and that the arguments for raising the age to 16 are compelling.

"This change would offer an important opportunity for parents to have extra flexibility at key times in their children's lives."

TUC secretary Brendan Barber welcomed the move saying it was "great news" for those struggling to combine parenting with work.
