PM is secret talks about temp staff

12 Apr 2008

PM is secret talks about temp staff Gordon Brown is supposedly in secret talks over proposed EU laws to protect temporary workers' rights, it has been reported.

The Financial Times reported last week that the prime minister was attempting to strike a "behind-the-scenes" deal with EU officials on a directive that would provide temps with full pay after six weeks in the job.

This could be good news for students who work as temps during the summer as they would be likely to earn more during the holidays.

Meanwhile, research has revealed that the UK's agency workers do not want the same treatment as permanent staff.

According to a survey released yesterday by ContractorCalculator, it was revealed that almost all British contractors "uniformly reject the employment rights" offered under the agency workers directive.

The independent employment website found that three-quarters did not want employee rights.

Last year, the government blocked regulations to improve the rights of temporary staff but France is believed to make it a priority of its EU presidency.

A spokesperson for the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform refused to comment on the EU bill, but said: "We're looking for an agreement that gives us the flexibility we need," ePolitix reported.
