The temping market is strong

11 Apr 2008

The temping market is strong An industry body has revealed that the temping market is strong and can help update workers' skills.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) spoke about the benefits of temporary employment.

Director of external relations at the REC Tom Hadley said that the temp market is "very strong" at the moment and though workers might not want to temp for a long time it is a good starting option.

"It helps you to get into a workplace and this can sometimes lead to permanent employment," he added.

"Temping certainly helps to update your skills as well."

He added that the market might be strong at the moment because employers are worried about taking on permanent staff due to the current financial climate.

This could be good news for students who work in temporary jobs during the holidays or to support their university studies.

Results from the Recruitment Industry Survey showed higher levels of demand for temporary workers.

The REC is the trade body that supports and represents the recruitment industry.

Meanwhile, a government bill that has been proposed by Labour MP Andrew Miller concerning the rights of temporary workers will not include IT and engineering contractors according to the minister.

The bill proposes to give temporary workers the same rights as full-time staff.
