M&S announces jobs are safe

25 Feb 2008

M&S announces jobs are safe Marks & Spencer's has said that it will not be cutting any jobs despite falling sales, which could be good news for students with part time jobs at the retailers.

The company revealed that over Christmas its year-on-year sales were down by 2.2 per cent but it has denied that it will result in a loss of staff.

Keith Cameron, human resources director at Marks & Spencer's, told Personnel Today: "Although the share price reduced dramatically after the Christmas sales, if you look at it now it's in line with the retail sector it has stabilised."

He added that the company is committed to the plans it revealed last year to "really grow our e-business and international business".

Mr Cameron also said that the loss in sales could be because of the expansion of the firm which has seen it grow from 360 stores to 600 in three years.

The fall in sales resulted in shares plummeting and £1.5 million was wiped off the value of the company.

It was recently announced that new part time jobs were to be made available in Glasgow as a new clothing, furnishing and food store is to be opened by Marks & Spencer's. An estimated 150 part time jobs may be created.
