Exeter offering summer jobs to students

18 Feb 2008

Exeter offering summer jobs to students A scheme operating in Exeter is allowing students to gain experience of the workplace during the summer months by signing them up with local businesses.

The arrangement - which pays students £300 per project and offers eight weeks' experience - hopes to benefit both students and firms as once the initial work has been completed the process can lead to a full-time position, reports the Express and Echo.

Speaking to the paper, Jonathan Wright, a business consultant at Transition, said the scheme - entitled Shell Step - had already resulted in a full-time role and that his firm would continue with the initiative in the future.

A spokesperson from Exeter University also added that the scheme removes some of the administrative burden of employing temporary employees for firms as the university looks after payroll details.

The spokesperson also said that Shell Step removes the need for businesses to employ consultants for specific projects as this work can be done by temporarily employed students.

Shell Step's website states that over the last 20 years, it has "delivered" over 20,000 projects to businesses across the UK.

It also states that students who use the service allow firms to "develop their business through the recruitment of bright, intelligent and talented individuals".
