IT jobs pay increases

12 Feb 2008

IT jobs pay increases People who work in private sector IT jobs are being paid more than their public sector counterparts, providing good news for students who have part time IT jobs, according to a report.

Research from the National Computing Centre (NCC) has revealed that salaries paid by the government are less than other sectors in practically every IT job.

The NCC has reported that overall salaries in the sector are increasingly meaning students looking for holiday work in the industry may find themselves with plenty of cash to take back to university.

Also on the increase is the number of people who are receiving bonuses in the sector, which has risen six per cent to 44 per cent. Bonuses have also risen in value to 8.3 per cent from 7.5 per cent.

A systems developer who has three years experience could earn an average of £29,665 in the government but would receive £32,329 in manufacturing, according to the research.

The report has also revealed the extent of the skills shortage in the sector. Just under 40 per cent of companies said that they had problems regarding recruitment and retention, which is up 11 per cent from last year.

NCC is the largest corporate membership body in the IT sector in the UK.
