Recruiters told to check interviews

29 Jan 2008

Recruiters told to check interviews Companies looking to recruit students and other new members of staff have been advised to check what they can and cannot ask during an interview by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The professional body has said that employers should be familiar with discrimination legislation before they conduct an interview.

Victoria Winkler, an advisor for the CIPD, said: "Aside from the fact that you don't want to get caught out breaking any of the legislation, in terms of recruiting and getting access to the most diverse people within the workforce – which is shown to make a positive impact on the business – then it really is important that they're familiar with the legislation."

She added that there is information available to employers on government websites and the CIPD website which can help companies which are recruiting to get through the process easier.

The advice follows a report from a Which? guide which said that many employees are confused about what a potential employer can and cannot ask them. Questions about age, religious views and length of experience are now illegal under discrimination legislation.
