Trusts warned over recruitment

03 Jan 2008

Trusts warned over recruitment Trusts in the UK have been warned to start preparing now for the recruitment process of junior doctors in order to avoid the confusion that surrounded the selections last year.

Students on medical courses throughout the UK can apply for training posts in England from January 5th and the British Medical Association (BMA) has warned that preparation is badly needed.

Mr Ram Moorthy, chairman of the BMA Junior Doctors Committee, said: "After last year's catastrophe, junior doctors want to know that a process that affects their whole careers will be handled fairly. Our concern is that without adequate planning, the levels of competition could result in a lottery."

He added that trusts need to get their recruitment practise in order and start preparing now to ensure there is no "unfairness, and no negative impact on patient care".

It is believed that competition for the places will be tougher than last year with three applicants predicted to be applying for each post available.

The BMA will be monitoring recruitment practises in trust for any unfair practises and due to the high volume it has been suggested that some applications will be routinely discarded, a practise condemned by the BMA.

Doctors in all branches of medicine are represented by the BMA which is a voluntary organisation.
