05 Dec 2007

Southampton University graduates to be boosted by universities ranking Graduates and current students of Southampton University will have their job prospects boosted after it was placed in the top 100 of the Times' list of 100 greatest universities in the world.

The World University Rankings put Southampton University in 80th place, ahead of the University of Glasgow and the University of Cardiff.

Marguerite Clark, an international education consultant told the online scene: "Studies in several countries have found a relationship between the perceived status of the degree-granting institution and employment and earnings outcomes for graduates."

Southampton jumped up the ranking this year from 141st place. This was a rise of 61 places from last year.

The rankings are worked out by considering the number of international admissions, ratios of staff to students and the opinion of over 1,500 companies who employ students in graduate jobs.

The results are also expected to boost the universities' applications, both from abroad and inside the UK.

Meanwhile, the number of graduate job vacancies has increased, according to the Association of Graduate Recruitment Survey 2007.

The report shows that the number of vacancies for graduate jobs will rise by 12.7 per cent this year giving a boost for graduates just starting their careers, according to personneltoday.com.
