Graduates sought in Welsh IT jobs

22 Nov 2007

Graduates sought in Welsh IT jobs There is a major shortage of graduates going into IT careers in Wales, it has emerged.

According to the director of IT Wales, Beti Williams, there is a growing shortfall in candidates of careers in IT, largely owing to the fact that not enough students are studying computer science.

Ms Williams commented: "We need to improve the public perception of computing in Wales and one way to help is to get businesses to link up with academia.

"Through our work at Swansea and Bangor universities, ITWales has brought together businesses and academics to discuss these issues and we plan to extend the initiative to other universities across Wales."

Students looking to channel their graduate careers towards the IT sector will be well placed to take advantage of the industry's deficits in Wales.

Meanwhile, women going into jobs in IT have been urged not to try to become like their male colleagues.

At the recent "Aiming for the top – how to be a successful woman in IT" event, women were advised that, rather than becoming preoccupied with gender differences, women should get on with do their best in the job.
