Students told of volunteering benefits

24 Oct 2007

Students told of volunteering benefits A Dorset MP has been advising local A-level students of the benefits of volunteering, it has emerged.

Jim Knight spoke to the Weymouth College students about how taking up a voluntary post in their spare time could do wonders for their career prospects, reports the Dorset Echo.

A tutor at the college, Sue Dafter, told the newspaper: "[Universities] want to see people giving something back to communities and so do employers. Volunteering has practical benefits for those who give up their time, by boosting their employability, for example."

She added that doing so can "broaden" students' outlook, build up their confidence and set up "networks that will benefit them through their lives".

Explaining the reason for bringing Mr Knight in to talk to the students, Ms Dafter said that she hoped to "raise [their] aspirations".

Voluntary work can be a fantastic way to do something worthwhile while on a gap year or alongside part time work while at university.

Youth volunteering charity V is launching a campaign to encourage young people into volunteering positions. It runs a series of events and puts on competitions like its latest giveaway of Oxjam tickets to four people.
