Honours go to apprenticeship star A bright young woman from Fife in Scotland has been celebrated at the Modern Apprenticeship Awards.

Lorraine Clark, a 22-year-old electrician, was pronounced Apprentice of the Year as well as Overall Achiever at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Edinburgh.

The awards, hosted by television star Stephen Jardine, recognised Ms Clark's impressive skills and inspiring attitude and commitment throughout her four year apprenticeship.

Other awards included large Employer of the Year, which went to Sky.

Sponsors of the awards include the Sunday Mail, the Daily Mail, learndirect Scotland for business.

Jack Perry, chief executive officer of Scottish Enterprise, said: "Modern Apprenticeships play a key role in improving the skills of our workforce - benefiting both young people and businesses in Scotland, and ultimately having a positive effect on the future of the Scottish economy."

He added that "thousands" of people have profited from involvement in the scheme, giving people an opportunity of having a "real job" while earning. He said it played a "vital role" in the Scottish economy.
