Award for enterprising student

09 Oct 2007

Award for enterprising student The Berkshire and Oxfordshire award for the most enterprising student has been awarded to Michaela Ellison.

Ms Ellison was thought deserving of the prize after spending her summer promoting and developing Surface View which is a new extension of Reading digital printing specialist VGL Ltd.

The work experience was part of 'Shell Step', a national challenge that Ms Ellison accessed through the University of Reading, where she is an undergraduate of English.

Working for a company, students are able to apply theory they have learnt at university in the world of work. After the completion of the programme a competition is run to find the Most Enterprising Student.

A panel of judges selected Ms Ellison from all the students taking part in the two counties.

She commented on her award: "I'm thrilled to have come this far in a nationally-recognised competition.

"I have learned so much this summer, which I am confident will stand me in good stead when I apply for jobs in the future."

Susan Matos, the Shell step manager for the Berkshire and Oxfordshire at the university explained that the programme was designed at helping students to gain relevant work experience therefore smoothing the transition from higher education to the workplace.

Ms Ellison attended the South of England Final of the competition last month in London and, although beaten, was pleased to have got so far.
