05 Oct 2007

Rise in Scottish language graduates There has been a significant increase in the number of people in Scotland graduating in languages.

According to a report by the Scottish Executive, 38 per cent more students graduated from foreign language degrees last year than they did in 2005.

In total there were 2,125 language graduates in Scotland which is a year-on-year increase of over a third.

Higher Education Graduates and Graduate Destinations 2005-6 was published on Tuesday this week and also showed increases in graduates from other course subjects.

The number of architecture graduates was up by 18 per cent, while the number of education graduates had risen by 12 per cent.

It was found that over half of all Scottish graduates had found either part or full time employment in Britain six months after graduating, which was up by one per cent on the previous year's survey.

The results are in line with recent research by Foreign Currency Direct shows that one in ten Britons are learning a new language before relocating abroad.
