University students are increasingly looking for work to pay off debts, according to the National Union of Students (NUS).

Under financial pressure from increased tuition fees, as well as the costs of living away from home, many students are getting part-time and holiday jobs alongside their study.

Money-savvy students are realising that to avoid being stung with "hefty repayments" after leaving university, getting a job can be an effective solution, particularly in the current climate of student debt.

"The biggest bulk of debt will be from student loans – to pay for tuition fees – and the maintenance loan," said a spokesperson for the NUS.

This year's Royal Bank of Scotland Student Living Index shows that the 41 per cent of students work part-time to raise extra funds. The average student working a part-time job earns £98 per week.

The research found Leeds to be the most cost-effective city to be a student, with students spending an average of £186 on living costs while earning £128 from part-time work.

Bar work, restaurant jobs and work in clothes shops are among the most popular part-time student jobs.
