Peterborough University gets inaugural students Peterborough University saw its first students begin their studies this week, according to reports.

Some 650 students have started their studies this year and the university is targeting attracting 1,500 students by 2011, reports the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.

The university opening marks the beginning of many fresh employment opportunities for graduates of the higher education facility.

It will continue to develop as a top higher learning institute with the creation of an £8.9 million university facility by 2009, which will cater for an extra 4,000 students.

Alison Davies, PRC director of higher education, said: "On Wednesday, I enrolled the first student of the new university centre, a major step towards a university of Peterborough.

"By 2011, the centre will be too large for the building and we will be looking for city centre South Bank premises to form a self-standing university for the city."

There are 27 educational qualifications on offer at the university including a masters in education.

The government's Teach First initiative has been a hugely successful drive for skilled graduates to skip teacher training and instead qualify for their qualification through two years hands on experience in some of the UK's inner city more challenging schools.
