Marks & Spencer Creating 550 Retail Jobs At 12 New UK Locations

Marks & Spencer has announced plans to open 12 brand new Food Halls across the UK, creating more than 550 full or part time retail jobs.

The new stores will be built on former Homebase sites, following the DIY retailer’s collapse into administration in late 2024.

M&S is snapping up these vacant sites to accelerate its ‘store rotation and renewal’ programme, which aims to deliver 420 modern Food Halls and upgrade 180 full-line stores before the end 2028.

So far, five of the twelve locations have been confirmed:

- Abingdon, Oxfordshire – 18,000 square feet, opening later this year

- Cannock, Staffordshire – 18,000 square feet, opening later this year

- Farnham, Surrey – 18,000 square feet, opening next spring

- Godalming, Surrey – 22,000 square feet, opening next summer

- Northampton, East Midlands – 16,000 square feet, opening next summer

The remaining locations are expected to be revealed later this year, with eight stores scheduled to open by the end of next year, pending planning approvals.

Each new site will offer roles in customer service, bakery, stock handling and food operations. Flexible part time jobs are likely to appeal to students and young jobseekers, while the company’s strong internal promotion track record makes these ideal stepping stones for a longer retail career.

Despite a recent cyber attack that temporarily disrupted online operations, M&S remains focused on growth. The retailer reported a 22 per cent jump in profits year-on-year, with new store performance exceeding expectations for three consecutive years.

Announcing the expansion plans, Stuart Machin, Marks & Spencer’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Investing in new and renewed stores is one of our key transformation priorities.”

“Securing these highly desirable sites in priority locations will accelerate this strategy, drive further growth in our M&S food business and most importantly give our customers the best possible M&S shopping experience,” added the CEO.
