Global entertainment giant Universal is set to create a whopping 28,000 theme park jobs in Bedford with the launch of a new visitor attraction in the area.
The massive new resort will be built on the site of a former brickworks in Bedfordshire, just outside Bedford, and is scheduled to open its gates in 2031.
Universal Destinations & Experiences, the company behind the project, claims it will become one of the UK’s biggest tourist attractions.
Around 20,000 jobs will be available during the construction phase, with an additional 8,000 permanent roles expected after the park opens.
Roles on offer will span a range of sectors including hospitality and retail - offering plenty of opportunities for students and graduates looking to break into those fields.
The huge development could potentially become one of the largest visitor attractions in the UK and will feature cutting-edge rides, immersive zones, a 500 room hotel as well as a leisure and retail district which is expected to be filled with places to eat, drink and shop.
Universal says it is aiming for more than 8 million visitors in the resort’s first year and predicts the site could pump up to £50 billion into the UK economy in the next 30 years.
Announcing the recruitment drive, Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, said that the development would single out Bedfordshire on the global stage and as ‘home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe.’
The Prime Minister continued: “This is our Plan for Change in action, combining local and national growth with creating around 28,000 new jobs across sectors such as construction, AI and tourism.”
“It is not just about numbers; it’s about securing real opportunities for people in our country. Together, we are building a brighter future for the UK, getting people into work and ensuring our economy remains strong and competitive,” said Mr Starmer.
Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, also commented, saying: “At a time of global change, this investment is a vote of confidence in Britain as a place to do business. Universal’s investment will bring billions to the economy and create thousands of jobs in the UK, putting more money in people’s pockets.”
Roughly 4 in 5 of the theme park’s operational workforce is expected to be hired locally, with a big focus on providing training, apprenticeships and pathways into work. Universal also plans to partner with local colleges and universities to help people develop the right skills before and after the resort launches.
