Harvey Norman To Create 100 Jobs & Apprenticeships In The West Midlands

Harvey Norman, the Australian retail chain, has announced expansion plans which will create around 100 new full or part time jobs in the West Midlands.

The furniture, bedding & tech retailer has chosen the Gracechurch Shopping Centre in Royal Sutton Coldfield as the site for its new UK headquarters, creating up to 100 vacancies for the region.

Following the success of its flagship store at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Brierley Hill near Dudley, the company is accelerating its West Midlands expansion, with other investments in the pipeline that could generate an additional 200 jobs further down the line.

Harvey Norman will be looking to fill various roles across departments including sales, marketing, finance and operations. Bosses say that they will also be creating apprenticeships and managerial positions in the area too.

The Gracechurch Shopping Centre is undergoing a multimillion-pound redevelopment, backed by the West Midlands Combined Authority, to introduce new retail, residential and leisure spaces across the region.

Explaining the move, Harvey Norman’s chief executive officer, Katie Page, said: “The West Midlands' high grade retail space and exceptional connectivity are two key reasons why we've chosen Sutton Coldfield as the home of our new UK headquarters and to launch our next store here.”

“Gracechurch will provide an excellent hub for our growing UK team and I look forward to returning to the region soon as we progress our expansion plans,” added the CEO.

The West Midlands Mayor, Richard Parker, welcomed the announcement, saying: “Harvey Norman's investment is a big win for Sutton Coldfield. It's proof that our high streets can thrive again, creating jobs and giving people more reasons to visit, shop and socialise.”

“With new jobs and homes on the way, we’re delivering real opportunities and making this town a great place to live and work.”

The UK’s Australia High Commissioner of Australia, Stephen Smith, also commented: “The United Kingdom is Australia’s second largest investment destination, as well as our second largest source of investment.”

“This major investment by Harvey Norman into the West Midlands is a great example of how investment is mutually beneficial and supports economic growth and jobs in both Australia and the UK.”

“The Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement, which came into force on 31 May 2023, is providing new opportunities to expand trade and investment by lowering barriers to trade and encouraging new investment,” said Mr Smith.

Established in 1982, Harvey Norman now operates over 300 stores worldwide across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia.
