This upcoming week (10th–16th February 2025) marks the UK’s 18th annual National Apprenticeship Week (NAW), a nationwide celebration of apprenticeships and their transformative role in shaping careers, businesses and communities.

Apprenticeships are no longer just for school leavers. They are a great option for any young people starting their careers, as well as current employees who want to upskill or move into a different industry.

With the theme ‘Skills for Life,’ this year’s event promises to spotlight how apprenticeships bridge skills gaps, empower career changers and fuel economic growth; all while offering students and other young job seekers a dynamic alternative to traditional academic pathways.

The government’s recent apprenticeship reforms, including the ‘Growth and Skills Levy’ and ‘Skills England’ initiative, aim to expand opportunities nationwide, ensuring apprenticeships remain central to the UK’s economic strength.

NAW 2025 will highlight success stories from apprentices and providers who credit apprenticeships with providing hands-on experience, earning while learning, mentorship and direct impacts on their communities.

Beyond apprenticeships, NAW 2025 will highlight complementary programmes like T Levels and Skills Bootcamps. T Level Thursday (13th February 2025) will focus on student experiences during industry placements, with a dedicated toolkit for educators and providers.

For students, NAW 2025 is the perfect time to:

- Research opportunities: Explore the apprenticeship pathways you might be interested in.

- Network: Attend events hosted by the likes of WorldSkills UK and local councils to connect with employers and current apprentices.

- Apply: Many employers advertise live vacancies during NAW.

Speaking ahead of NAW 2025, Minister of State for Skills and Government spokesperson for Equalities, Jacqui Smith, said: “We are focused on apprenticeships all year round, and I am looking forward to celebrating the achievements of the thousands who take on apprenticeships every year this coming National Apprenticeship Week.”

“They wouldn’t have these opportunities without the support of employers who train these talented individuals in the skills we need for the future.”

“With our new Growth and Skills Levy, we are giving these businesses greater flexibility over their training, and through Skills England we will boost opportunities across the country so even more people can get on in life and drive our economic recovery,” added Baroness Smith.
