House giant launches graduate scheme

05 Sep 2007

House giant launches graduate scheme Leading housing firm Barratt Developments has launched a recruitment programme aimed specifically at graduates.

This will come as welcome news for university leavers looking to enter the property industry, as it is the first initiative of its kind in the house-building sector.

Jayne Mee, human resources director at Barratt Developments, told People Management: "There had been no one leading the development of people and asking where the talent for tomorrow was coming from.

"The graduate programme will supply us with a pipeline that we haven't got at the moment.

"Providing we have done our job properly we will have developed recruits technically but also their leadership skills, so they should later be capable of taking on management roles."

From this month, 50 graduates will embark on the two-year scheme.

The first year involves a series of eight-week placements in different fields.

In year two, trainees can choose to specialise in an area and will be able to take part in voluntary work in the local community or abroad.

The scheme will allow graduates to gain the sort of valuable practical experience in the industry which is currently in short supply.

However, the venture has proved extremely popular, with over 750 students applying online - and competition looks set to be fierce for future places.
