Grads can "flourish" in small firms

04 Sep 2007

Grads can "flourish" in small firms Graduates joining small enterprises after university have "a lot more room to flourish" within their careers, according to one recruitment expert.

Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, recently explained that the early responsibility usually available in smaller companies could provide graduates with valuable experience.

He explained: "If you join a small firm that's growing, for instance, you're certainly going to take part in something exciting - a company that's potentially going places.

"And if you carve out your own niche then your career could follow a very rapid trajectory and you could end up being a director within a matter of years, rather than perhaps, in some larger firms, having to wait for someone to leave or move up."

Graduates may also choose to work for small firms, Mr Hawes commented, because they are often convenient for university leavers living outside London who cannot afford to relocate.

The small business recruitment climate looks healthy at the moment.

A recent survey by the Small Business Research Trust revealed that many small businesses in the UK were planning to increase recruitment in the third quarter of this year.

The career opportunities afforded by smaller UK firms often compensate for the fact they usually cannot match the starter salaries offered by the big city firms.
