Rolls-Royce Launching 200 Nuclear Engineering Apprenticeships in Derby

Rolls-Royce has announced brand new plans to create 200 apprenticeships in Derby.

The car manufacturer is set to offer 200 new nuclear engineering apprenticeships starting from this Autumn.

Applications for this year’s intake of nuclear engineering apprentices will close next week (27th May 2022) but Rolls-Royce are expecting to run the new scheme for at least the next ten years.

As well as building cars, Rolls-Royce also designs and makes nuclear reactors for the United Kingdom’s submarines.

The company will be offering four different types of nuclear engineering apprenticeships and the new recruits will help to develop the UK’s new Dreadnought submarines.

Rolls-Royce already employs around 1,500 engineers in Derby to work on the UK’s submarine fleet.

Announcing the new opportunities in Derby, Rolls-Royce’s president of submarines, Steve Carlier, said: “We are proud of our unique nuclear capability and we are fortunate enough to have some of the smartest minds on the planet working for us. But we must maintain this capability if we want to continue to innovate and evolve.”

“Being born and bred in Derby, I am immensely proud that we are playing our part in further boosting the area’s reputation for engineering excellence. The UK is embarking on a nuclear renaissance and we are determined to make the East Midlands the home of nuclear expertise for decades to come,” added Mr Carlier.

Rolls-Royce’s submarines engineering and technology director, Lee Warren, gave some further details on the apprenticeships which will be on offer, saying:

“All four courses offer debt-free, higher education qualifications while earning a wage within an exciting and growing business that supports the UK’s net carbon ambitions. If you know someone who is finishing school or college, rethinking university debt, or even already in work and looking for a change of career, our apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity.”

“Our new academy will not only maintain and develop our nuclear capability for years to come, but it will also provide invaluable STEM qualifications for hundreds of individuals at the very start of their careers.”

“Generations of submariners have put their faith in our nuclear expertise and our new academy will mean we can keep providing them with cutting edge technology to keep them, and the UK, safe,” said Mr Warren.

The director of talent and human resources at Rolls-Royce, Adam Ellis, also commented, saying: “This is a perfect opportunity for talented individuals to join our team and bring new ideas and concepts to the table that will create a legacy for generations to come.”

“We want to build a diverse team of people with a background in science, a passion for nuclear, or from a sector with transferable skills, with a diverse mix of skills and experiences.”

The managing director of Marketing Derby, John Forkin, welcomed the announcement, saying: "This news is as significant as it is welcome. Derby hosts one of the UK’s largest clusters of nuclear expertise and the investment in future skills by Rolls-Royce will help deliver greater opportunities for young people to join this growing sector."

Likewise, Scott Knowles, the chief executive of East Midlands Chamber of Commerce, also praised the initiative saying: “The shortage of STEM skills, which has been a challenge for industries including manufacturing and engineering for a long time, is reaching critical levels as businesses of all shapes and sizes struggle to recruit the people they need to service demand. Bringing through the next generation of talent is therefore a priority if these sectors, which are crucial to the East Midlands economy, are to continue growing and creating wealth in their communities.”

"New ideas are needed to inspire and train young people, so it’s really exciting to see Rolls-Royce, one of the flagship names in engineering, playing a central role in this agenda. It also helps to cement our region’s emergence as a key player in the nuclear sector, which is primed for an important role in our country’s future energy mix,” added Mr Knowles.
