Commonwealth Games Creating 20,000 New Vacancies In Birmingham

The Commonwealth Games will create a massive 20,000 new temporary vacancies in Birmingham this summer, with both full and part time jobs up for grabs.

The UK’s third biggest city will host Birmingham 2022 from July 28 until August 8 and it will be the largest sporting event the West Midlands city has ever been a part of.

The Commonwealth Games organising committee will itself generate 600 jobs but a further 20,000 staff will be needed to look after over 6,000 athletes from over 70 countries - along with millions of spectators - over the summer months.

The summer jobs will last for between three weeks to three months and a very wide range of roles will be on offer in and around Birmingham.

Organisers are anticipating that they will receive more than 25,000 job applications for the 20,000 vacancies on offer, so move quickly if you want to work at the Games this summer.

Launching the recruitment drive for staff this summer, a Birmingham 2022 spokesperson said:

“The Commonwealth Games recruitment programme is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people to get involved in the action, and play a part in what will be a milestone for our city and the entire region. To say you worked for the Games and were involved in them is something you can tell future generations, and that's a big part of the excitement for the event itself.”

The Leader of Birmingham City Council, Councillor Ian Ward, encouraged local people to apply, saying: “The message is clear: if you want to be able to say you played your part in showcasing Birmingham on the global stage, by working on the biggest event we have ever held here, now is the time to come forward.”

“A wide range of roles are on offer, and the experience gained from being involved with such a prestigious event will be a real strength on the CVs of those who work for Birmingham 2022. The Games are much more than the 11 days of sporting action, and this is another key example of why that is the case,” added Mr Ward.

The Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, also commented, saying: “The Commonwealth Games were always about so much more than medals and athletes. And it is this legacy of jobs and improved opportunities that made me so determined to help land this global event for our region.”

“It is, therefore, brilliant to see that thousands of opportunities are on offer through the Games, especially as these roles have become even more critical given the pandemic has left many people out of work and others worried about their future,” said the Mayor.

Natasha Doyle has been a member of the Commonwealth Games team since last year. Offering some input on her experience so far, she said: “I was so excited to be offered a role with Birmingham 2022. Having now been here for a year, I love that every day is different, and I am working with colleagues who I can learn from, and be inspired by. I feel proud to be a part of such a unique team and opportunity.”

Just some of the roles still to be filled for Birmingham 2022 include positions in catering, cleaning, customer services, finance, marketing, media, retail and security.

Contracts last from anything between 3 weeks to 3 months and all roles are fully paid.
